Disney diehards were likely waiting all night during Super Bowl LVII to see a commercial for the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid — but it never came. Where was it? Apparently finished, but just waiting to drop online without having to make the $7M+ ad spend.
The new 30 second spot doesn’t offer much more than what the initial teaser provided last September, but the new reveals it offers are significant, from a quick sneak at Prince Eric about to “kiss the girl” Ariel (Jonah Hauer-King and Halle Bailey, respectively) to the first glimpse at Melissa McCarthy‘s Ursula.
Flounder is briefly seen (as he was in the first teaser) but Jacob Tremblay‘s voice is not heard, and the rest of the high-profile cast of characters remains absent, including Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, and Oscar-winner Javier Bardem as Ariel’s father King Triton.
Plus, the only song cue heard is, as before, “Part Of Your World.”
Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods) and including new songs co-written by Alan Menken and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also wrote the songs for Encanto), The Little Mermaid will swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.
