So this is the new era of the DC Cinematic Universe. Huh.
Okay, not quite new, but definitely different.
Blue Beetle (and this first-look trailer) is more a product of the transition between the old Snyderverse and the fresh direction being spearheaded by Guardians of the Galaxy / The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran. But however you (or they) define it, Blue Beetle is definitely not what we’ve come to expect from the darker, heavier DCEU of the past decade.
Playing more like a Marvel movie by way of the Disney Channel, Blue Beetle takes a second-tier DC superhero (much like Marvel did, appropriately enough, with Ant-Man) and makes what appears to be a fun, silly action comedy aimed much more at families.
Directed by Puerto Rican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto, it also leans heavy into its Hispanic / Latin heritage. Starring Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the title role, the Latinx ensemble also includes Bruna Marquezine, Harvey Guillén, Elpidia Carrillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Damián Alcázar, and George Lopez. Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon also co-stars.
How much this will tie into the future of where the DC franchise (and multiverse) is headed remains to be seen, but for now Blue Beetle looks to target families for one last blast at the summer box office before kids go back to school when it opens on August 18, 2023.
