After a year off from TV due to a post-scandal shake-up in the voting membership of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes are back…basically.
In a more low-key, straightforward announcement, the HFPA revealed the nominees for the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, all for a ceremony that has been bumped from it’s usual Sunday night slot to a mid-week Tuesday evening affair. Whether stars show up or not (especially any who aren’t nominated) also remains to be seen.
For the film nominees, the Irish-set dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin led the pack with 8 nominations including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director and Screenplay for filmmaker Martin McDonagh, and nods for it’s four main actors: Colin Ferrell (Best Actor, Musical or Comedy), Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan (Supporting Actor), and Kerry Condon (Supporting Actress).
Indie sensation Everything Everywhere All At Once followed close behind with 6 nominations including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director and Screenplay for “The Daniels” filmmaking duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and nods for it’s three main actors: Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress, Musical or Comedy) and Supporting Noms for Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Tying for 5 nominations (all including Best Motion Picture) were Steven Spielberg‘s The Fabelmans, Baz Lurhmann‘s Elvis, and Damien Chazelle‘s Babylon, although Chazelle (whose La La Land set a Golden Globe record) was the one of the three denied a Best Director nod.
Possible Oscar contenders that were snubbed by the Globes include the strong female ensemble period drama Women Talking, Brendan Fraser‘s comeback with director Darren Aronofsky The Whale, and (less surprising) Apple’s gritty slave drama Emancipation starring Will Smith.
While Emancipation was the only film that was completely shut out from that trio, Women Talking and The Whale only managed three combined. Writer / Director Sarah Polley received a Screenplay nomination for the former as did the film’s composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (even as actresses Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy, Frances McDormand and Judith Ivey were all ignored), and Brendan Fraser received The Whale‘s lone nomination for Best Actor in a Drama. Fraser’s nomination is particularly ironic in that he won’t attend the ceremony out of protest, due to his accusations of sexual harassment committed against him years ago by an HFPA member.
Other notable snubs: Tom Cruise was denied an Actor nom despite Top Gun: Maverick being nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama. Its director Joseph Kosinski was also left out. The Cruise snub is less surprising, though given how he returned all three Globe awards that he had won over the years after the HFPA’s ethics scandal exploded in 2020. Like Fraser, Cruise is a likely no-show even though he is one of the producers for Maverick.
Female directors were also goose-egged. Contenders included Polley for Women Talking, Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King, and Chinonye Chukwu for Till. The star of Till, Danielle Deadwyler, was also left out of the Best Actress Drama list despite being considered a likely Oscar nominee.
Jordan Peele‘s sci-fi thriller Nope was also entirely ignored, despite notching wins in some early critics group awards. Janelle Monáe has also received some critics group love for her supporting turn in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery but was absent from the Globes’ list of five.
The 80th Golden Globe Awards will be handed out live on Tuesday January 10, 2023 at 8pm EST/7pm CST on NBC and streaming on Peacock, with host Jerrod Carmichael.
