If loving long overdue sequels is wrong, I don’t wanna be right!
Amazon Studios has released the first official production images for Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1988 blockbuster comedy Coming To America now, but now with a clever numerical tweak in the title.
Eddie Murphy reprises his role as Prince Akeem (amongst other cameo characters he also famously created, often in the same scene) and Arsenio Hall joins him as Akeem’s trusted aide Semmi. Together, they go on another trip from their fictional African kingdom of Zamunda to Queens, New York.
The reason for the return journey, now over thirty years later? Akeem seeks out the long lost son that he never knew he had.
Directed by Craig Brewer (the filmmaker behind Murphy’s recent comeback film Dolemite Is My Name, as well as Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan) and written by Kenya Barris (TV’s Black-ish) and the original’s scriptwriting team, Coming 2 America reassembles the ensemble that includes Shari Headley, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Louise Anderson, and Garcelle Beauvais. New cast members include Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne, and Jermaine Fowler.
Originally produced by Paramount Pictures before being sold in the wake of the studio’s pandemic-era selloff (that also included The Trial of the Chicago 7 to Netflix), Coming 2 America will now debut exclusively on Amazon Prime next year on March 5, 2021.
