There’s a new movie coming to theaters from Walt Disney Studios. Or so they say.
After being jerked around and ultimately denied theatrical releases for Mulan and Pixar’s Soul, Disney’s first teaser trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon promises a proper theatrical run this spring. We’ll believe it when we see it.
Regardless, what this first look does deliver on is the epic goods.
With a mythos set in Southeast Asia, Raya (voiced by The Last Jedi‘s Kelly Marie Tran) is a young warrior who has been trained to guard the Dragon Gem.
To protect it and save her people, she must fight an ancient evil (natch) and seek the last dragon — named Sisu (Awkwafina) — who has transformed into a human. Joining her is the animal sidekick Tuk Tuk who undergoes a transformation of his own.
Co-directed by Don Hall (Moana) and Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting) — who replaced original, long-time Disney animation directors Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins in a big creative shakeup — Raya and the Last Dragon is set to open in movie theaters (and not on Disney Plus) on March 12, 2021.
