Old West Hanks Rescues Girl In NEWS OF THE WORLD Trailer (VIDEO/IMAGES)

Tom Hanks stars in his first Western (alongside German newcomer Helena Zengel) in Paul Greengrass’s NEWS OF THE WORLD. It opens December 25.

I’ll be showing up for Tom Hanks but staying for newcomer Helena Zengel. News of the World, Hanks’s first foray into the Western genre, reunites the two-time Academy Award winner with his Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass.

Together, they adapt the novel by Paulette Jiles about an Old West traveling newsreader (Hanks) who rescues the lone survivor of an accident (or attack?): a 12-year-old white girl (Zengel) who only speaks Kiowan, a Native American language. The journey to find and return her to where she came from becomes more perilous than he could possibly imagine.

A Hanks/Greengrass Western reunion is enough to warrant a ticket, but its the young German actress Zengel who steals the latest trailer. What the CoensTrue Grit did for Hailee Steinfeld, I’d imagine News of the World will do for Zengel: serve as an auspicious global debut for a promising career (perhaps even garnering Zengel a Supporting Actress nomination in the process).

Despite all of the defections from 2020, News of the World is still slated to open in theaters this year on Christmas Day.
