In a movie that likely would’ve been made by Michael Mann a generation ago, director James Mangold (Logan, Walk the Line) dramatizes the true story of how an American car designer and British racing star helped Ford to take on Ferrari in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France.
Starring Christian Bale as Ken Miles, the racer, and Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby, the designer, Ford V. Ferrari looks to follow some typical bio-beats. Not the least of which: overly contrived dialogue and self-aware moments of import, amped up for dramatic effect and comic relief.
It’s probably a long-shot for awards season contention, even if Bale and Damon elevate the material (Damon’s southern accent ain’t helpin’, though), but it may shift into the right gear as a big crowd-pleaser.
Ford V. Ferrari opens this fall on November 15, 2019.
