As far as upcoming Brad Pitt performances go, all of the pop culture oxygen is, understandably, going to be around Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. But for me, this is the one I’m ancticipating more.
Ad Astra is a NASA-based sci-fi adventure that leans heavily into the philosophical, and it comes from director James Gray, a filmmaker little known outside of cinephile circles. Among critics, however, he’s considered one of the best American directors of this century. (For me, Gray’s The Immigrant was the best film of 2013 and, more recently, The Lost City of Z was #4 in my Top 10 List for 2017.)
In this first trailer for Ad Astra, the visual scale looks on par with Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity but may have even higher thematic ambitions.
Co-starring Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga, and Donald Sutherland, Ad Astra opens this fall (at the start of Awards Season) on September 20, 2019.
