It’s hard to imagine a movie being “more” Quentin Tarantino than his 9th one, Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood. It has everything he geeks over: movie sets, movie stars, a hip retro soundtrack and the styles to go with it, some kung fu fighting, and that turn-of-the-mid-century era when Old Hollywood was transitioning to New Hollywood.
It’s all here in the film’s teaser trailer, a first look that basically reveals a premise that’s already been publicizied (here, in the official synopsis):
- Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood’s golden age.
Along with DiCaprio and Pitt, the deep bench all-star ensemble includes Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Timothy Olyphant, Scoot McNairy, Damian Lewis, Luke Perry, Dakota Fanning, James Marsden, Clifton Collins, Emile Hirsch, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Danny Strong, and Lena Dunham.
Set to debut in May at the Canne Film Festival (possibly on the 25th Anniversary date of Pulp Fiction‘s premiere there), this may or may not end up being the iconic writer/director’s magnum opus, but it sure seems destined to be the “definitive” Quentin Tarantino.
Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood opens in theaters this summer on July 26, 2019.
