Well hello, what have we here?
Writer/director J.J. Abrams is bringing back everybody’s favorite smooth double-crosser with a heroic streak: Lando Calrissian. The Hollywood Reporter broke the scoop that Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his most iconic character for Star Wars: Episode IX.
This news, of course, comes on the heels of the recent hiring of Keri Russell in an unknown role, which reunites the actress with Abrams. He was the creator and show runner of Russell’s breakout TV series Felicity, and hired her again for Mission: Impossible III.
(Here’s me hoping Abrams continues that trend by casting his Alias star Jennifer Garner in some sort of Jedi – or Sith – role, although that’s probably wishful thinking at this point. But I digress…)
Williams’ presence will help alleviate the absence of the original trilogy’s core trio, especially after the unexpected passing of Carrie Fisher, but more than anything it will be another welcome bit of fan service for all of the Star Wars die-hards. And knowing Abrams, even if the appearance is brief, J.J. will make sure that it’s more than just obligatory and actually be meaningful.
One thing’s for sure: Lando truly belongs here among the clouds of the Star Wars universe.
Billy Dee Williams will don the cape once more as shooting begins this summer. Star Wars: Episode IX will open next year on December 20, 2019.
