Whoa, this is heavy, Doc.
After a ten year break from big budget blockbusting, Steven Spielberg returns with Ready Player One, the adaptation of the popular YA novel phenomenon. Set in 2045, it’s a young man’s journey through OASIS, the future version of the internet that has gone full-blown VR.
In it, there’s an Easter Egg hunt that promises to be a golden ticket of sorts, but instead of a chocolate factory think of this as a dark dystopian Charlie and the Virtual Reality.
The book has been both beloved and derided as a 1980s nostalgia trip, yet true to late-Spielberg form (particularly post-Kubrick collaboration A.I.: Artificial Intelligence), the onetime wunderkind can’t help but infuse some heady contemplation into his tentpole spectacle, about where technology is taking us and what it’s doing to us.
Starring Tye Sheridan (whose elastic-length legs in the poster below have been the joke of new internet memes), Ready Player One – which co-stars recent Spielberg favorite Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, The BFG) as the Wonka-esque OASIS creator – hits theaters this spring on March 30, 2018.
