Shazam 2 should be a fun fury.
Following last summer’s Comic-Con teaser, the latest trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods lays out what’s up in this sequel to the 2019 surprise breakout hit for DC.
Fury of the Gods introduces Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as The Daughters of Atlas, Hespera and Kalypso. They’ve come to, well, take over the world, apparently.
Standing in their way is Shazam himself, the adult superhero alter ego (played by Zachary Levi) of teenager Billy Baston (Asher Angel). Helping him in the fight is his new Shazamily of heroes: Freddy (Adam Brody), Eugene (Ross Butler), Darla (Meagan Good), Pedro (D.J. Cotrona), and Mary (Grace Caroline Currey).
They, like Levi to Angel, are all the Superhero alter egos to Billy’s teenage friends, led once again by Billy’s best friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).
West Side Story‘s breakout Rachel Zegler is also along for the adventure as Anthea, the younger sister of Hespera and Kalypso. Where her allegiances lie remains to be seen.
Director David F. Sandberg returns from the original for this second chapter, in a DC entry that’s been shuffled around a few times on the calendar as the new regime from Warner Bros. has tried to figure out what they want to do with the DCEU post-Zack Snyder. It’s now led by Guardians of the Galaxy guru James Gunn and producer Peter Safran (Aquaman, Annabelle).
Shazam! Fury of the Gods bolts into theaters this spring on March 17, 2023.
