The instant buzz labeling this as “The African Braveheart” is an apt one.

Based on a true story about a fight for freedom, Viola Davis stars in the upcoming action epic The Woman King, about the all-female warrior army in 19th Century West Africa.

From director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard, Love & Basketball), it follows the exploits of the Dahomey Amazons. They were led by General Nanisca (Davis) as they fought against enemies who enslaved their people and violated their honor.

The cast includes John Boyega, Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), and Thuso Mbedu (Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad) as a young ambitious recruit.

Set to hit theaters this fall, The Woman King looks to lead the beginning of the Awards Season when it opens on September 16, 2022.
