Now that’s the trailer Thor fans have been waiting for.
After an initial teaser held back on revealing Christian Bale‘s bad guy Gorr the God Butcher, the new, full, official trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder shows off Gorr in all his pale, chilling, Voldemor-ish evil. (A first look at Russell Crowe‘s Zeus is then added for good measure.)
Beyond that, what’s shown in abundance is director Taika Waititi‘s kitchy, cavalier style, one that embraces goofy comedy and classic rock.
Waititi is copying the template he set in Thor: Ragnarok, one that ditched the staid regality of the first two Thors (movies that directly emulated the comic books) and opted instead for a Guardians level of slapstick set to a mixtape soundtrack.
If you liked that change (most did; me, not so much), you’ll love this.
Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster to take up the Thor mantle (complete with that Hammer), and Tessa Thompson‘s back as Valkyrie, too, as this chapter transitions the Thor franchise to full Girl Power.
Thor: Love and Thunder opens this summer on July 8, 2022.
