With the new trailer for Walt Disney Animation’s Raya and the Last Dragon, the studio confirms that — despite all of the 2021 blockbuster defections from Spring to Fall — they are sticking with their March 5th release date.
But they’re also hedging their bets.
As with the live-action remake of Mulan last September, Raya will be available day-and-date on streamer Disney Plus via Premium Access. In other words, that’s an additional one-time $30 “ticket” fee to access it.
Notably, Disney Plus ditched that model this past Christmas when it launched Pixar’s Soul as a “free” catalogue addition for all subscribers, with no extra fee.
As far as the new Raya trailer goes, it plays up comedy and attitude with a fun swagger, i.e. kid-friendly tones that weren’t as evident in the first teaser‘s emphasis on epic adventure.
We also get our first look at the actual Last Dragon, voiced by Asian-American comedy star Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8, The Farewell).
Starring the voice of Kelly Marie Tran (the Star Warssequeltrilogy) as Raya, the ensemble also includes Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, and Benedict Wong.
