The songs may deliver the blues, but the performances promise to soar.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, based on the award-winning play from legendary playwright August Wilson, looks to be a powerhouse showcase for its two stars Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman.
Both appear to be early locks for Academy Award nominations in the lead acting categories, as does the lush, flashy production of this fiery 1927 Chicago-set music-drama from Tony award winning director George C. Wolfe (Angels in America).
While the Black Bottom dance was a real thing, originating in African-American before being appropriated in the Jazz Age, this first trailer would suggest that the title is also metaphoric for two black musicians who are reaching rock bottom.
From producer Denzel Washington, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom opens in select theaters this November before launching worldwide on Netflix December 18, 2020.
