The smirk is back.
After an initial teaser in which Tom Cruise stayed oh-so-serious, it was encouraging (and a relief!) to see — if even for just a brief moment at the end of the opening clip — that hint of the cocky Maverick swagger.
The ace pilot still can’t hold back the smirk when talking to his superiors, and that’s just one nostalgic throwback in a trailer filled with them. The look, sound, music, and feel of the first full official trailer for Top Gun: Maverick delivers everything you’d want a Top Gun sequel to be, including real aerial stuntwork with Cruise in the cockpit. That’s right, Iceman: he’s dangerous. (Still no Iceman to be seen, though, despite Val Kilmer returning for the role). And now, Maverick is taken on the role of Jester as the new lead trainer of the Top Gun cadets.
Joining Cruise and Kilmer will be Miles Teller (who plays Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s deceased co-pilot Goose), Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, and Glen Powell. Also in the cast: Ed Harris (seen in the initial teaser), Monica Barbaro, and The Good Place‘s Manny Jacinto.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (who worked with Cruise on Oblivion and Teller in Only The Brave) and co-written by Mission: Impossible mastermind Christopher McQuarrie, Top Gun: Maverick flies into theaters on June 26, 2020.
