Well that took long enough.
After twenty-plus movies in which she was the primary (and one of the few) female Avengers, Natasha Romanoff — and Scarlett Johansson — finally gets her own Marvel movie in Black Widow.
Joining Johansson in this long overdue entry (that seems part origin story, part reunion during the MCU timeline – maybe between Civil War and Infinity War?) is Natasha’s family of spies, played by a strong cast including Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbor as Alexei aka The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as a seasoned Black Widow vet.
Gotta say, based on the first trailer, this quartet looks really good, displaying a great energy and chemistry between them.
Rumor as it that this will be a one-off for Johansson, with the BW baton being passed off to Pugh (who’s Yelena Belova becomes Black Widow in the comics), but the same was supposed to happen in the Mission: Impossible franchise when Jeremy Renner was hired to take over for Tom Cruise.
Suffice it to say plans can change. Depending on how this blockbuster is received (and how crucial Johansson is perceived to be for its success), this may just be the beginning of a whole prequel/mid-MCU series that Johansson drives — and in which old Avengers can come back for cool cameos — while Pugh’s Belova assumes the mantle in new present-day Avengers adventures.
Black Widow opens on the opening weekend of summer (which Marvel owns), May 3, 2020.
