J. J. Abrams has made it clear how important it is to him that he’s not only bringing a trilogy to a close but, of much greater consequence, a whole 9-part saga — and that Episode IX will reflect exactly that.
The latest TV spot for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker embraces that spirit by using the most iconic music cue from Episode I to drive it: John Williams‘ “Duel of the Fates”.
That track — which underscored the epic battle of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi against Darth Maul — can be heard juxtaposing Rey and Kylo Ren, with the voice of The Emperor still playing the role of Phantom Menace.
Here’s to hoping that John Williams pulls this classic theme out of the canonical archive to use it one last time in The Rise of Skywalker. What a thrilling bookend that would be.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens on December 20, 2019.
