Previous trailers for Pixar’s Onward seem to have teased a fairly conventional tale beneath its “Mythical World meets Suburban Domesticity” high concept, one that’s complete with daddy issues.
Well, this new trailer may suggest something different, and better: a movie that ditches the issues (but still requires the tissues) and, instead, tells an adventure story about how we’ve embraced the ordinary and lost sight of the extraordinary, and how we need to recapture a sense of magic and wonder.
While also, you know, two sons bringing their deceased father back to life through a comedy of errors.
Thankfully, this is the first trailer that’s made me hopeful there’ll be something more to this than just familiar bromides. The voices of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt star alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer.
Onward opens on March 6, 2019.
