A cultural icon for twenty years — first on TV, then two movies, and recently a Tony-nominated musical — the popularity of SpongeBob SquarePants shows no signs of letting up, so his upcoming third feature film should prove a real crowd-pleaser.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run follows in the computer-animated style of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water but this time embraces it fully, foregoing that 2015’s animated/live-action hybrid approach.
It’ll also be the first without creator Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away in 2018, but by the looks of this first trailer the signature zany style remains fully intact and unleashed — including an inspired cameo casting of Keanu Reeves. The full voice cast is back along with guest stars Snoop Dogg, Awkwafina, and Reggie Watts.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run opens in theaters on May 22, 2020.
