It’s like a Christian movie, with swears.
Though not in any way associated with the Kendrick Brothers (who’ve made breakout hits like Facing The Giants and this year’s Overcomer), The Way Back follows the general template of a tried-and-true faith-based formula: an alcoholic overcomes his demons by taking on a high school coaching gig that nobody wants. Together, with the student players that no one respects either, everyone finds redemption.
Making this more intriguing is that it stars Ben Affleck, an actor notorious for his own struggles with alcohol addiction (even recent ones), and that could make for a fascinating, self-informed (and cathartic) meta-performance.
Directed by Affleck’s The Account helmer Gavin O’Connor, The Way Back opens next spring on March 6, 2020.
