Now honestly, how hard was that?
The title rodent of Sonic the Hedgehog (the iconic video game / animation blue-fuzzy speedster) finally looks like himself rather than, you know, a freakish bizarro version.
(Here’s a side-by-side tweet of the old and new renderings.)

Thanks to the huge online backlash against the original monstrosity (which was revealed in the first trailer earlier this year), Paramount Pictures delayed the scheduled November 2019 release to February 2020 so that director Jeff Fowler and his animation team could fix what was so clearly a disaster. How it ever could’ve become what it initially did remains a dumbfounding mystery, but hey, the national pop culture nightmare appears to be over.
The new, better, more accurate and fun version should please fans and casual viewers alike…but what remains is still little more than a high octane kids movie (one anchored by a conventional road movie formula, no less).
Thankfully, Jim Carrey plays a literal mustache-twirling villain with an absolutely go-for-broke bonkers approach, offering some welcome insanity for parents forced to endure this in theaters and umpteen times at home, all for the entertainment of their kids.
James Marsden co-stars as Sonic’s real-life buddy, and Ben Schwartz (of Parks & Rec fame) provides the voice for the little guy.
Hoping to be your valentine, Sonic the Hedgehog opens on February 14, 2020.
