This looks exactly like the type of straight-to-streaming effort that Disney+ should be all about.
Rather than investing hundreds of millions of dollars to “realistically” update animal-driven classics from the Disney vault on the level of The Lion King , the live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp employs the approach from a simpler time: using real animals and simply animating their mouths to speak English.
It may not break any new ground in cinematic digital wizardry, but it doesn’t need to. Instead, as teased in a new trailer, this well-produced charmer is just what families are signing up for when they subscribe to Disney+, a.k.a. something that may not have huge box office appeal but works perfectly as a primo option for family movie night at home, as well as a comfy go-to repeat.
Starring the voices of Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux in the title roles, the vocal cast also includes Sam Elliott, Ashley Jensen, Janelle Monáe, and Benedict Wong. Joining them in the live cast are Kiersey Clemons, Thomas Mann, Yvette Nicole Brown, Adrian Martinez, Arturo Castro, Ken Jeong, and F. Murray Abraham.
Lady and the Tramp premieres on Disney+ when the streamer launches next month on November 12, 2019.
