New Trailer For ONWARD Doesn’t Move Pixar Forward (VIDEO)

Is Pixar moving onward…or backward?

In their first full official trailer for Onward (following a previous teaser), Pixar studios puts a lot of energy into a movie that appears to lack inspiration while also trying too hard.

Coming off more like a DreamWorks or Illumination feature-length cartoon that panders to kids but ends up having a shorter shelf life, Onward does a subversive riff on a genre (fantasy legends, in this case, with a suburbia twist) packed with a lot of goofy humor.

There’s a boilerplate father/son element, too, but everything teased so far plays strictly for laughs without adding in Pixar’s patented emotional punch.

That may be why this is the studio’s first spring release rather than launching in one of the two typical big blockbuster windows of either summer or the holidays. (I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney was *this close* to releasing it straight to Disney+.)

Starring the voices of Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer, Onward opens on March 6, 2020.
