Marvel’s well-oiled marketing machine rolled out a new special look at Captain Marvel, the latest and newest addition to their Cinematic Universe.
The 90-second promo – which debuted during coverage on Disney’s corporate cousin ESPN of the NCAA College Football Championship – offers a fresh take rather than a remixed rehash of previous trailers. It emphasizes the movie’s comedy and wit (including a satirical meta crack at the end that you might expect from a parody movie) while also defining the intergalactic villians in clearer terms.
The excessive reliance on digitial effects is still paramount (unfortunately), but this also shows hints of some striking shots that could suggest MCU overlord Kevin Feige is continuing to let directors put more of their own visual stamp on this universe (like he did with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther) as the MCU goes into its second decade. This one is directed by indie filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, It’s Kind Of A Funny Story) and lensed by cinematographer Ben Davis (Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange).
Starring Brie Larson in the title role and a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson as Captain Fury (this is set in the 1990s), Captain Marvel opens on March 8, 2019.
