“It’s not just about revenge. It’s about a lot of things.”
That’s how actor Michael B. Jordan describes Creed II and, by the looks of this strong second trailer, I’d agree.
The latest boxing sequel in the extended Rocky saga pits Jordan’s Adonis Johnson, son of Apollo Creed, against Russian Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago, the man who killed Adonis’s father in the ring (in 1985’s Rocky IV).
Like the first Creed, this appears first and foremost to be a character study of a young man battling his demons and regrets while in the long shadow of his iconic lineage. It also just happens to be a sports movie.
It’s great to see Sylvester Stallone continue as the aging Rocky, now serving in the “Mickey” trainer / mentor role and with regrets of his own.
Newcomer Steven Caple Jr., directs, continuing the tradition of having an up-and-coming African-American director steer the creative vision (following in the footsteps of Creed director Ryan Coogler, who stays on as executive producer).
Co-starring Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad, who return from the first Creed film, along with Dolph Lundgren reprising his Drago role from Rocky IV, Creed II opens this Thanksgiving on November 21, 2018.
