My review of The Breadwinner, for The Tulsa Voice. A recent Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature, from the makers of The Secret Life of Kells and Song of the Sea. It’s now streaming on Netflix.

It’s the story of a young girl in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan who must dress as a boy to try to make money and provide for her family. Rarely in films have “the dangers of being a woman under Taliban control felt so palpable and heartbreaking.”

  1. From the studio that brought us ‘the secret of kells’, ‘the breadwinner’ is an animated masterpiece most relevant for our times.
