Streep And Hanks In First Trailer For Spielberg’s Oscar Bait THE POST (VIDEO/POSTER)

The Academy Awards handed out to this movie may actually be presented on a silver platter.

That’s the strong vibe emanating from the first trailer for The Post, Steven Spielberg‘s dramatization of the fight by The Washington Post to publish classified documents (known as The Pentagon Papers) that exposed government corruption during the Vietnam War, through multiple administrations.

In this apparent liberal hagiography, Meryl Streep stars as risk-taking publisher Kay Graham (who must stand against the slimy patriarchy to boot) and Tom Hanks plays Ben Bradlee, the principled editor-in-chief.

Trailers, by their nature, play a film’s most obvious notes. Here’s to hoping the actual movie is much more nuanced than the softball lobbed here.

The deep bench cast also includes Tracy Letts, Carrie Coon, Bob Odenkirk, Bradley Whitford, Alison Brie, Sarah Paulson, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlberg, and Zach Woods.

The Post opens in select theaters on December 22, 2017, and goes wide on January 12, 2018.
