Make room for James Franco in the 2017 Oscar Race.
A one-time nominee before (rightly so, for 127 Hours), Franco will likely find himself as a major contender again for the ironically titled The Disaster Artist. Based on the making of the infamous low budget bomb The Room – a train wreck of filmmaking often cited as The Worst Movie Ever Made – Franco plays Tommy Wiseau, the mad genius behind the cult legend.
Co-starring brother Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver, Ari Graynor, and Jason Mantzoukas, the breakout hit of the South by Southwest Film Festival is also directed by James Franco. If anybody can unseat current consensus favorite Gary Oldman in The Darkest Hour, Franco may be that inspired dark horse.
The Disaster Artist opens in limited release on December 1, 2017, and will expand in the weeks following.
