The influence of John Williams on film composer Michael Giacchino‘s career could be heard from his earliest scores for video games and television. Now, Oscar-winner Giacchino has become the first non-Williams to write the music for a Star Wars movie.
In an exclusive, Entertainment Weekly was invited to a recent recording session for the score to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. After some opening thank you’s from director Gareth Edwards, we hear samples from two of Giacchino’s score: “Her Path Is Clear” (likely in reference to heroine Jyn Erso) and “Approach to Eadu” (a new planet in the Star Wars universe, a possible hiding place for the rebels).
And both definitely sound like they’re from the Star Wars galaxy.
WORD OF CAUTION: Apparently a track list for the entire score is floating around out there on the web. I’ve not read it, but apparently the track titles essentially give away the plot, so avoid at all costs.
You won’t have to dodge it for much longer, though. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens on December 16, 2016.
