Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg have a heart for American heroes.

Fresh off the BP oil spill thriller Deepwater Horizon, Wahlberg and Berg reteam for a third time in Patriots Day. It will complete an “American Hero Trilogy” that began with Lone Survivor.

Patriots Day is the true story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing perpetrated by two self-radicalized brothers, and the subsequent manhunt that followed. Wahlberg plays a cop on the beat that day.

The film – which co-stars Michelle Monaghan, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, and J.K. Simmons – will be scored by the Oscar-winning music team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The Nine Inch Nails frontman and Ross are best known in the film world for their ominous undertones on David Fincher‘s The Social Network and Gone Girl.

Patriots Day opens in limited Oscar-qualifying release on December 21, 2016 before expanding wide on January 13, 2017.
