For a sequel that basically nobody’s asking for, my hunch is that this teaser will still have the average moviegoer thinking, “Hey, that could be fun.”

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise from action producer Jerry Bruckheimer. By the time Pirates 5 opens next summer it will have been six years since the previous chapter, and ten to fifteen years since the saga debuted and its popularity was at an apex.

Given that time frame, Pirates 5 could very well see the series shifting into “nostalgia” mode, with kids and teens raised on those adventures now returning as young adults, hoping to recapture some of that childhood magic they fondly remember.

This first look delivers on that hope, even without a glimpse of Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow, as Javier Bardem pulls off the bad guy role just as creepily and comically as you’d expect.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens worldwide next summer on May 26, 2017.
