Once dubbed the next Spielberg, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has struggled to fulfill that promise after an impressive (and lucrative) early three-film stretch that began nearly twenty years ago.
Based on this disturbing debut trailer, Split may be the closest thing to those glory days he’s offered up yet. (Warning: the predatory nature of the villain’s actions is very unsettling.)
With overt Hitchcockian influences, Split follows a mentally disturbed James McAvoy (the X-Men franchise) as he kidnaps three teenage girls and holds them hostage. The terror mounts as the young women learn more shocking revelations about their captor, ones that possibly give McAvoy the biggest character canvas of his career.
Co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Split opens on January 20, 2017. (Click here to see the film’s 2nd trailer.)
