The Revenant hit movie theaters as a big question mark, a gamble. Would audiences be willing to sit through a grueling 2 1/2 hour endurance test that was driven by a contemplative, philosophical spirit – and cost $135 million to make?
At a $108 million dollar gross so far going into its third weekend of wide release – and looking to take the #1 spot at the box office – the gamble has paid off. Against most odds, and all conventional moviegoing trends, audiences continue to flock to a movie that requires a lot of them. (A deserving 12 Academy Award nominations has no doubt helped.)
For those who’ve gone on the journey and been utterly enthralled by The Revenant‘s visceral, hypnotic pull, here’s a compelling video that compiles the various small featurettes produced by 20th Century Fox, creating one full 19-minute “making of” piece. It covers the various aspects of production: cast, direction, scriptwriting, cinematography, production design, makeup, themes, and more. All key collaborators – Leonardo DiCaprio, writer/director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and each top behind-the-scenes artisan – are interviewed.
WARNING: Spoilers! But if you’ve seen the film, this will only help you appreciate it all the more.
