The Star Wars franchise has awoken to the first of what are likely to be several box office records to come.
Final estimates show that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has opened to $57 million on Thursday evening, setting a U.S. record for Thursday night. It easily tops the previous Thursday night record of $43.5 million set over four years ago by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in July 2011.
Of course this is just the first post-opening record for the 7th Star Wars installment. It’s already set a new mark by racking up more than $100 million dollars in advance ticket sales domestically. Analysts – and theaters – are bracing for a $200 million-plus weekend haul, with hopes (and growing expectations) that it’ll pass the current opening weekend take set this past June by Jurassic World, when that reboot exceeded tracking estimates by $80 million to open to $208.4 million over its first three days.
