The Man in the Hat is back, and the hype train for Indiana Jones 5 is about to kick in.
Though the movie’s official title remains a mystery, a new promo image (see gallery below) for the long-awaited sequel shows Harrison Ford in the full Indiana Jones costume for the first time since 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It serves as the cover of Empire Magazine’s upcoming January 2023 issue.
UPDATE: The first official trailer for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny can be seen here.
And when you zoom in on the image (also in gallery below), you can see a ring on Indy’s wedding finger. Maybe that’s just an oversight during the day of the photo shoot and that’s simply Ford’s real-life wedding ring (he’s married to actress Calista Flockhart), but hopefully it’s intentionally there for the character, and that it possible teases an on-screen cameo return of Marion (Karen Allen), whom Indy finally married at the end of the previous adventure.
Notably, in the first film photo in the gallery (see below), Indy is not wearing a wedding ring.
Along with this Indy cover: an alt-cover that showcases an image of Indy 5 concept art. In it, the indomitable archeologist stands in the middle of the jungle known as New York City.
Speaking to why he returned to the role one last time in his late 70s, Ford says in the Empire interview, “I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey.”
And the biggest tease of all? Director James Mangold said that he expects the first teaser trailer for Indiana Jones 5 to be released within the next month, putting that at no later than mid-December (perhaps in conjunction with the theatrical release of corporate cousin Avatar: The Way of Water on December 16).
The January edition of Empire Magazine will hit newsstands on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday November 24. Indiana Jones 5 will be released in theaters for next summer’s extended July 4th holiday weekend, on Friday June 30, 2023.
