The invitation is officially out for everyone to return to Downton Abbey.
For diehard fans who can’t get enough of the elegant period soap opera, the first trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era is a thrilling tease for Anglophiles. It’s the second feature film of the franchise, following a hugely successful (and Emmy award-winning) 6-season TV run and a major motion picture that became a surprise #1 hit at the box office.
For those (like me!) who were concerned that the next chapter would be without Maggie Smith‘s beloved Dowager Countess, this first look dispels those fears from the jump. Indeed, Downton Abbey: A New Era will revolve around a secret from Victoria Crawley’s past, one that sets the whole Crawley family on an elegant adventure like we’ve not seen before with this Upstairs / Downstairs cast.
Along the way, another extravagant wedding will be celebrated (between Tom Branson and Lucy Smith, played by Allen Leech and Tuppence Middleton, who fell in love in the first film) along with more drawing room intrigue and gossipy dinner parties.
The full cast of Downton favorites return, and joining them will be newcomers Dominic West (TV’s The Affair and The Wire), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Hugh Dancy (TV’s Hannibal and Homeland).
Described as an “unashamedly feel-good film” by writer and creator Julian Fellowes (Oscar-winner for Gosford Park), Downton Abbey: A New Era opens next spring on May 20, 2022, exclusively in theaters.
