Many critics have praised director Ridley Scott‘s The Last Duel as surprisingly entertaining. (I wasn’t one of them.) Based on this new trailer, however, Scott’s upcoming House of Gucci promises a rather potent and exhilarating entertainment, all while taking its subject-matter seriously.
The root of balancing those two virtues: Lady Gaga.
The Oscar-winning songwriter (for “Shallows” from A Star Is Born) looks to deliver a powerhouse performance as Patrizia Reggiani Gucci, one that could be the main Best Actress contender for Spencer‘s Diana, Kristen Stewart.
The camera work from Dariusz Wolski is also arresting, framing Gaga in ways that maximize her chilling ruthlessness.
So much is working so well in this latest, fullest preview that even the poor Italian accents (Adam Driver, mostly) are forgivable.
If the final film can be this fun without reducing itself to camp (which is what this trailer promises), Scott could have a hit and Oscar contender on his hands.
Co-starring Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons and Salma Hayek, House of Gucci opens in theaters Thanksgiving weekend on November 24, 2021.
