To sequel spinoffs and beyond!
For the first time, Pixar is expanding into broader “universe” territory with one of their properties, and now we have our first look at it.
Lightyear is essentially “the movie” that the toy character Buzz Lightyear is merchandise for. The toy is based on this, not the other way around. As Pixar chief Pete Docter put it:
- DOCTER: “Back when we created the first Toy Story, we designed Buzz Lightyear with the idea that he was a toy based on some really cool character from an epic blockbuster film. Well, all these years later, we decided to make that film.”
In this first teaser, we get a good sense of that film, one that — while clearly establishing Buzz Lightyear in a much broader, fuller context — happens to pay bits of homage to Marvel and Star Wars films along the way.
The former is certainly fitting as the voice of this Buzz Lightyear isn’t Tim Allen but Captain America himself Chris Evans. The creative impulse for that is pretty simple: voice talent for toy merch is rarely the actual marquee actors who play the roles, so it makes sense to go a different direction here (and who better than Evans?).
Evans is thrilled, too, saying:
- EVANS: “Trust me when I say that they REALLY know what they’re doing over there. This one is gonna special, and it doesn’t step on a single thing. I can’t even put my excitement into words. I smile every time I think about it.”
Directed by Angus MacLane (co-director of Finding Dory and helmer of Pixar shorts BURN-E and Small Fry), Lightyear opens next summer on June 17, 2022.
