THE BATMAN Trailer Is The Darkest Knight Yet (VIDEO/IMAGES)

Robert Pattinson stars as THE BATMAN, who fights The Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman in this new, bleak trailer. It opens March 2022.

If Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy was a sleek Michael Mann styled crime drama, then director Matt Reeves appears to be giving The Caped Crusader the full David Fincher.

Descending into the gritty, grungy darkness of Fincher flicks like Se7en and Fight Club, the latest trailer for The Batman is the edgiest, bleakest big screen incarnation of the character yet.

Starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, it follows a young Bruce Wayne in his early years as Batman, fighting off a psychotic serial killer Edward Nashton, a.k.a. The Riddler (Paul Dano), a mysterious kingpin Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin (Colin Ferrell, believably unrecognizable in makeup and Italian-mobster dialect), while also mixing things up with would-be burglar and star-crossed love interest Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz).

While the original teaser focused more on Dano’s Riddler, this one gives us longer looks at Penguin and Catwoman — and a noticeably ruthless Batman.

Co-starring Jeffrey Wright as Detective James Gordon and Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, The Batman opens in theaters on March 4, 2022.
