What’s old is new again.
That’s the vibe of the new trailer for Old, the latest horror thriller from M. Night Shyamalan.
Following a career resurgence with Split and Glass (which came after one of the biggest career slumps of the past 20 years), Old — about a group of people and families who start to age rapidly on a mysterious beach — appears to have Shyamalan back in his peak form.
With a sense of classic cinematic patience and how that ratchets up fear, mystery and dread, Old may reignite the “New Spielberg” sentiments that came his way during The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs.
That label aside, what’s intriguing about Old in pure genre terms is how Shyamalan uses the horror milieu to go beyond high concept scares and gratuitous torture porn to actually explore themes of life and death, how we face death, and if we’re actually ready to. Even as a fan of his recent work, this has the potential to exceed those successes and be back in the league of his best.
Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Ken Leung (TV’s Lost), Nikki Amuka-Bird, Aaron Pierre, Embeth Davidtz (Schindler’s List), Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), and Rufus Sewell, Old (based on the graphic novel “Sandcastle”) opens exclusively in theaters this summer on July 23, 2021.
