Matt Damon Sets To Rescue His Daughter In STILLWATER Trailer (VIDEO/IMAGES)

From Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy, STILLWATER is the latest drama from the director of SPOTLIGHT. Starring Matt Damon, it opens in theaters Summer 2021.

The trailer doesn’t have me intrigued, but the pedigree does.

Stillwater is the latest film from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Tom McCarthy, whose Spotlight won Best Picture back in 2015. It stars Matt Damon, a roughneck oil rig worker from Stillwater, Oklahoma who travels to France when his daughter (Abigail Breslin) is arrested for a murder she adamantly claims she didn’t commit.

Judging by this first look, Stillwater looks like a fairly pedestrian version of that synopsis (if also well-produced), but given McCarthy’s track record (which also includes The Visitor, his best film, and The Station Agent, his heralded 2003 debut), I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. It wouldn’t be surprising if the full narrative has surprises of its own, ones that McCarthy is deftly keeping out of the trailer for now.

One thing is clear, though: Damon’s Bill Baker doesn’t have the lethal fighting skills of his more famous alter ego Jason Bourne.

Initially slated to open last fall before the pandemic hit, Stillwater will now debut this summer when it opens in theaters on July 30, 2021.
