Who is that sad little person? It’s Cruella de Vil.
For a question originally (and snidely) posed by Meryl Streep‘s nasty Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, the perfect answer to it would now seem to be Cruella, Disney’s new splashy spin on an iconic character that’s giving off some serious Prada energy.
That looks to be a good thing, though, because this origin story for the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil appears to be much more than some formulaic retread.
As if seeing Emma Stone (in the title role) and Emma Thompson (the Streep surrogate) sinking their teeth into this material isn’t fun enough, the gaudy but lush visual palette is absolutely eye-popping.
Even with heralded indies like I, Tonya and Lars and the Real Girl under his belt, Chris Gillespie may have crafted a serious calling card for himself. This meticulously designed stunner may be as much of a showcase for him (and what he’s capable of when given a big Disney-sized budget) as it is for his actors.
Previous previews for Cruella had me intrigued, but this one has me legitimately excited.
Thankfully, Disney will be giving it a theatrical release (along with its Disney Plus Premier Access $30 option) when Cruella kicks off the summer movie season on May 28, 2021.
