The 2020-21 Awards Season keeps trending Nomadland.
The microbudget indie starring Frances McDormand as a low-income widow who decides to embrace a nomadic life in modern America won the top prizes at the 26th Annual Critics Choice Awards: Best Picture and Best Director, Chloé Zhao. It also won for Adapted Screenplay (going to Zhao) and Cinematography.
The four awards match other recent wins in recent awards shows, which have been riding a wave of an early and consistent critical embrace.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s Citizen Kane “writing of” drama Mank came up short. Of its 12 nominations (tops for this year), it only managed to win one for Production Design.
The #MeToo vigilante thriller Promising Young Woman gained steamed, winning Best Actress for Carey Mulligan and Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Emerald Fennell, who beat out favorite Aaron Sorkin for The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom also boasted a strong showing with three wins. Leading the way was the late Chadwick Boseman, who was named Best Actor (and seems to be an Oscar lock at this point; a SAG win should secure that status). His widow gave another deeply moving and well-spoken speech on his behalf, following a similar display at the Golden Globes. Ma Rainey’s also took two tech awards: Costume Design and Hair & Makeup.
But perhaps the most emotional and endearing speech came from the most unexpected source and category: Alan Kim, the 8-year-old actor from the Korean immigrant drama Minari, who won for Best Young Actor/Actress. Overwhelmed, his sincere joy and gratitude turned into unstoppable tears. (You can watch it here.)
The 26th Annual Critics Choice Awards aired on Sunday March 7, 2021 on the CW. The virtual ceremony was hosted by Taye Diggs.
