The Golden Globes will always be the second-most watched awards show after the Academy Awards, but the Critics’ Choice gala has eclipsed them as the most reliable Oscar predictor.
With that in mind, Netflix’s Mank continues to build its momentum in the Oscar race with 12 nominations from the Critics Choice Awards. And thanks to a streaming-friendly season (due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Netflix also set a single-studio record with 4 nominees for Best Picture in one year.
From director David Fincher (and written by his late father Jack — both nominated), Mank is the story of Herman J. Mankiewicz (played by nominee Gary Oldman) and his challenges with writing the screenplay for the Orson Welles classic Citizen Kane, considered one of the greatest films ever made.
Coming in second with a surprise 10 nominations is Minari, the small indie film starring Stephen Yeun about an immigrant Korean family in the 1980s trying to start a life in rural Arkansas.
Other major nominees included Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (8 nominations), starring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman (both nominated), and the Tom Hanks western News of the World (7 nominations).
For a group that is supposed to be discerning, the Critics Choice membership has come to allow as many as 7 to 8 nominees in categories other than Best Picture. The result ends up being a checklist of acting nominees that have been routinely cited throughout awards season.
Even so, there were a few surprise omissions, perhaps most prominently Michelle Pfeiffer for French Exit and a shutout of the supporting actors from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. There was also First Cow, a popular choice on various Top 10 Lists and some critics groups, which only manage nods for Adapted Screenplay and Cinematography.
The voting body also reduced their number of overall categories, ditching genre lineups like Best Animated Feature (surprisingly) and (less surprisingly) Best Action Movie and Best SciFi/Horror Movie.
The 26th Annual Critics Choice Awards will air Sunday March 7, 2021 at 8pm EST / 7pm CST on the CW. It will be hosted by Taye Diggs.
