While most big Oscar season hopefuls have fled from theaters entirely for 2020, Universal Pictures continues to double-down on its commitment to a Christmas Day release for News of the World, the new Western that reunites the Captain Phillips actor / director collaboration of Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass.
This latest promo is the studio’s first featurette for the post-Civil War story.
In it, Hanks discusses the role of Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd — a traveling news reporter and widower who rescues an abandoned white girl that only speaks a Native American language — and the story’s themes.
The child is played by German newcomer Helena Zengel, who looks potentially Oscar-worthy in her own right next to the two-time Academy Award winner.
Barring a pandemic-forced about-face, News of the World opens exclusively in theaters on December 25, 2020.
