Dune is happening. Here’s the photo to prove it.

Vanity Fair has published the first look of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides (see full image below), the son of a powerful family who finds himself in the midst of a power struggle on the sand planet Arrakis, a key mining outpost author Frank Herbert‘s sci-fi classic Dune. (Here, he’s pictured walking on a beach from his oceanic home planet of Caladan.)

Along with the photo, VF’s Anthony Breznican interviews Chalamet for a first on-the-record discussion about the highly-anticipated epic, along with comments from director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) who appears to have given the film his signature desaturated, depressive, overcast aesthetic.

The article (which you can read here) is the first of at least two, with a bigger feature story coming tomorrow.

The all-star ensemble includes Josh Brolin as Paul’s solider-mentor Gurney Halleck, Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson as Paul’s parents Leto and Lady Jessica Atreides, and Javier Bardem as the leader of indigenous Arrakis humans known as Freman. Stellan Skarsgard and Zendaya also co-star in the key roles of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and Chani.

Dune , which is Part One of a planned Two-Part narrative (although the second film has yet to be given an official green light). is scheduled to hit theaters this holiday season on December 18, 2020…barring any pandemic-contingent rescheduling.
