The end of the end is almost near.
Yes, the final episode of the Skywalker saga — Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — has come and gone in theaters. But now, its eternal home in our video archives is finally about to land on 4K UltraHD, blu-ray, DVD and digital (and, eventually, Disney+).
Those will come with the requisite bundle of bonus content, natch, and Disney/Lucasfilm has released the first ten minutes from one of the biggest features: the behind-the-scenes documentary The Skywalker Legacy.
If this intro is any indication, the legacy overview will focus on Episode IX, but it will do so in context with the original trilogy (and likely the prequels as well). As you’ll see in the ten-minute clip above, the making of the final film is juxtaposed with the making of the original ones, emphasizing how they mirror each other.
It should be a fun, nostalgic trip that will also give us glimpses at the genuine chemistry between the final trilogy actors (like in a brief moment between John Boyega and Oscar Isaac in the second half of this preview).
But don’t hold your breath for any exposes about Colin Trevorrow‘s original vision for the finale (although you can read about it here and see concept art for it here and here), how that all fell apart, or what director J. J. Abrams chose to ditch or reformat for his story (or why).
This is feel-good content, pure and simple, and now you can enjoy the first bit of it before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releases on the aforementioned formats March 31. It’s available now in digital download.
