In October of 2021, you can be in the theater where it happens.
Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda and Walt Disney Studios have announced that they will be bringing the Original Cast Production of Miranda’s musical sensation Hamilton to movie theaters nationwide on October 15, 2021.
This is not a new film version of the Best Musical Tony winner. The actual theatrical presentation that won numerous awards (including the Pulitzer Prize) will be shown on the big screen, thanks to a professionally videotaped production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (Hamilton‘s Broadway home) in June of 2016.
Claiming to be a “leap forward in the art of “live capture,” the press released teased that this special presentation will “transport its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way. Combining the best elements of live theater and film, the result is a cinematic stage performance that is a wholly new way to experience Hamilton.”
No details were given as to the length of the theatrical run, whether it will follow a traditional release window or be a One Night Only presentation. It’s more likely to be the latter as that’s the usual approach to movie theater presentations of live theatre events, but given that October 15, 2021 is a Thursday night it could just as easily be a kickoff to a limited full-release run.
Regardless, a year-and-a-half is still a ways off, so just you wait…just you wait…
